Is there a link between Emotional Intelligence and Corporate Social Responsibility? Let’s look at what emotional intelligence (EQ) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) are first.

World Business Council for Sustainable Development definition: “Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as the local community and society at large.”

And emotional intelligence? I like the Six Seconds definition: “Emotional Intelligence is being smart with feelings so you can develop optimal relationships with yourself and others.”

Mark from Life Options (http://www.markthecoach.com) connects the two: “CSR revolves around an organisation having a sense of belonging, ownership & responsibility towards the community it operates in, and manifesting it through projects it undertakes that benefit the community at large. This obviously involves having an…EQ… corporate culture of collaboration, accountability, selfless giving and achieving goals responsibly.”

Whether the organisation wants to reach out to clients and customers, or engage employees in the mission of reaching out, emotional intelligence is involved.

Joshua Freedman from 6seconds.org adds: “…if a company wants truly motivated employees, they need to consider the deep motivators of purpose, belonging, and significance. Effective CSR isn’t just about “responsibility” to the community, and should definitely not be just about marketing… But can be part of the overall people-strategy and building a place where top talent is committed to being and doing their best.”

So what does all this mean? It’s not about the money! It’s not about carbon credits or offsets. It’s not just about donations to community projects. It’s about loyal and productive employees enjoying their roles and enhancing the organisation because they feel engaged and valued.

Notice that in CSR, Corporate comes first, then Social. It will not work well to endeavour to put on a public face of CSR, only to have the employees unhappy and undermining the company in front of clients and customers.

There is a company that a family member used to belong to that engages in CSR. Yet he is not the only one that I have heard complain about the way that company manages its people. While the company is trying to build a public face of CSR, the employees are busy complaining about them. The two are at odds with each other.

Emotional Intelligence encourages employees to work together, to “develop optimal relationships”. Once optimal relationships exist between employees, then the company benefits through optimal relationships with clients and customers.

There are ways to find out the “emotional climate” of your organisation and to enhance emotional intelligence. If you would like more information, contact Jenni Wright by email: goingyourway [at] fastmail.fm

Social Media is the new way to have people pay attention to me on the internet. To learn what I do, to hear about my work.

Imagine being able to build a following using tips and techniques from Mike Stelzner’s Social Media Success Summit 2009! That would be awesome!

I’m already aware of Mike’s work with White Papers (www.whitepapersource.com) and have no doubt that his training in Social Media will be just as informative and practical.

From Mike’s web page:

Dear Fellow Marketer;

Is your business struggling to find new opportunities?

If so, I can relate. The pain of the economic downturn has hit us all. When people aren’t responding and it’s harder to get noticed, what’s a marketer to do?

Social media marketing addresses these issues head on. Without costly ads, fancy design or professional copywriting, social media tools like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn are transforming businesses by providing amazing exposure, tons of traffic, partnership opportunities and quality leads.

I’m happy to introduce the first major online summit designed to help marketers achieve social media success. The world’s most respected social media marketing authorities (see the great line-up on the right) have come together to share their proven strategies. They’ll reveal their secrets and the nitty-gritty details you need to know to immediately benefit from social media.

If you (like so many) find yourself confused by all the social media options, now’s your chance to set a course for social media success.

Be sure to secure your spot in the largest online professional development conference for marketers seeking to master social media.

Here’s to a bright future together!

Michael A. Stelzner
Event founder and fellow marketer

P.S. In case you’re wondering, social media marketing is an engagement with online communities to generate exposure, opportunity and sales.

P.P.S. Can I be blunt? By this time next year, the gold rush to social media marketing will be near complete and every marketer will be looking to social media. The early birds really do get the spoils!

If you like the thought of joining a community of like-minded women and men who’ll share their experiences and wisdom as you journey together down this road, keep reading…

===========================================

One beautiful summer day, shortly before he started kindergarten, my son, who was five-years-old at the time, and I were driving somewhere (more than likely a toy store ), when, seemingly out of nowhere, he asked me what I knew about this “God thing”, as he phrased it.

As simply as I could put it, I shared with him my personal belief…

Essentially…

That One is All and All is One. That one Intelligent Substance manifests itself as what appears to be many elements of the material world.

Simply put…

We’re all made from the same Stuff, a Thinking Stuff.

After I finished my simplified explanation of this concept, he sat there quietly for a moment or two, staring out the car window, then he looked at me and said…

“Daddy, that makes sense!”

And…

With “ah-ha” written all over his face…

He added…

“So that’s why you’re always telling me to love my neighbor as myself and to treat other people the way I want to be treated, because we’re all one, right Daddy?”

At age five…

He got it!

Not long after our “God talk”, as he likes to refer to it, impressed by his insight and “feeling my oats”, I guess, I decided to tackle a very simplified version of the concept of gratitude to the Formless (the one Intelligent Substance from which all things are made), the importance of expressing gratitude to the Formless, and the various ways in which we might express our gratitude to the Formless, with him.

As I was enthusiastically waning on and on (I guess I got a little carried away ) about how to express gratitude to the Formless, he sat there with a puzzled look on his face (okay, actually it was his “you idiot” look ).

Finally…

Obviously unable to take it anymore…

He piped up and said…

“Daddy…”

“Since we’re all made from the same stuff, isn’t saying thank you to someone else the same thing as saying thank you to the stuff?”

Hmmmmmm…

Ms Jenni Wright from http://www.emotionalintelligenceaus.com talks about the Dalai Lama the torch relay and compassion.

The Dalai Lama has been in Seattle for a five-day Seeds of Compassion conference. Organisers say his visit was expected to draw more than 150,000 people. The conference featured dozens of workshops on various subjects, beginning with a panel discussion on the opening day with the Dalai Lama on “The Scientific Basis for Compassion: What We Know Now.” He was determined to attend the Seattle conference because of his commitment to global peace, organisers said.

In recent days, the Dalai Lama has been very open in his comments about the Olympics, the torch relay and Tibet. The Dalai Lama ‘…wants compassion for both sides, for the Tibetans, for the Chinese brothers,” said Lama Tenzin Dhonden, a Tibetan monk who spearheaded the development of the conference.

Compassion comes in two forms – compassion for self and compassion for others. Compassion never excuses obnoxious behaviour. Instead it makes us more aware of hurts and feelings that may be below or behind the behaviour and move towards the person in compassion rather than to further attack someone who is already wounded or hurting.

Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence Why it can matter more than IQ says we are all born with the capacity for empathy, but we sometimes choose to ignore it. In the very new science called social neuroscience Goleman says it shows that we have the default wiring to help others. We feel with a person automatically. See http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/200

Why is it then that we can walk by someone in need in the street? In his talk, Goleman comes to the conclusion that all it takes for compassion to happen is that a person become aware that compassion is needed. This can be a call to action for others, who then rally round and assist.

Compassion, often called empathy, is certainly one of the emotions that is gaining attention in research. Other speakers at the Seeds of Compassion conference will explore the new research that shows infants can mirror emotions much earlier than previously thought.

What if compassion were rife rather than violence? What if we carefully trained our children in compassion? Children are obviously learning about emotions sooner than we thought, so would it be a thought to teach them how to manage emotions well? There was a saying when I was younger that attitudes are caught not taught. What are we teaching our children about attitudes, about the way to behave?

Why wait until another tsunami, hurricane or other catastrophic world event? Compassion in the small, everyday circumstances of life can have a ripple effect that CAN change the world. The Dalai Lama believes it, and so do I.
